Why choose DiMeN?

The DiMeN Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) brings together the expertise of five world-leading universities: Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield and York, to address some of the most pressing health challenges facing people today.

BENEFITS OF THE DIMEN DTP

Each year we recruit and fund around 40 students to work on our overarching vision of Discovery Medicine across the Lifecourse. Now in its tenth year, the programme provides a collaborative research community to train the next generation of biomedical researchers.

Funded through the Medical Research Council, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI, the national body supporting world-class research and innovation), DiMeN students benefit from exceptional research training and support. Being part of an MRC-funded DTP provides additional advantages for your PhD studies, including interdisciplinary research opportunities, access to outstanding facilities and expertise, and enhanced funding and training designed to support career development and research excellence.

If successful, your research project will be hosted at one of our five partner institutions and will focus on one of our three major research theme:

  • Infection and Global Health

  • Cancer

  • Multimorbidity, Frailty and Diseases of Ageing

A cross-cutting theme of Medical Technologies, Informatics and Quantitative approaches provides opportunities for our students to develop skills in data science, technology development, and quantitative research across the partnership.

FUNDING

DiMeN DTP studentships are fully funded for 4 years and include the following financial support over the duration of the studentship.

  • A tax-free maintenance grant set at the UKRI minimum rate. (£20,780 p.a. for 2025/26, updated each year)

  • Full payment of tuition home fees.  Additionally, we have a very small number of highly competitive funded places available each year for international fee status applicants. International candidates are required to meet all visa, healthcare surcharges, and relocation costs themselves.

  • A research training support grant (RTSG) of £4125 per year to support your research costs.

  • Opportunities to apply to the MRC Flexible Supplement scheme to further support your training and development needs.

  • iCASE Projects:  A number of our projects have iCASE industry partners.  For these projects students will benefit from an enhanced stipend (£2,500 pa supplement to the UKRI standard rate), additional research/consumables budget for the project and a minimum of three months on placement spent working with the industrial collaborator.
