scRNA-seq Analysis Using R Course - Catherine Hatton

Updated: Nov 26

Thanks to the flexible funding I’ve received from DIMEN, I was able to complete a five day online scRNA-seq analysis using R course run by EMBL-EBI in October 2022. It was an extremely informative course and I was able to gain valuable bioinformatic skills. I am excited to now apply these skills to the scRNA-seq dataset I have generated and hopefully answer some important questions about the interferon response to SARS-CoV-2 in the nasal epithelium.

The course contained both theoretical and practical guidance and I was able to gain knowledge on the areas of the analysis that I had previously been confused about. Whilst this training was intense, it enabled me to get a deeper insight into something I otherwise wouldn’t have normally had access to in my lab group. Gaining these skills has enable a much more streamlined approach to carrying out my project, as I like to be able to carry out the data analysis throughout all stages of the progress.

ScRNA-seq analysis training from a prestigious institute such as EMBL-EBI, with talks from some of the leading professionals in the field, was incredibly valuable for the progress of my PhD. I believe the skills I have gained from this course provide a solid foundation for a career as a data scientist once I complete my PhD. Bioinformatic analysis skills are highly employable in today’s job market and I believe this will help me become a competitive candidate for jobs.

It was great to meet other researchers from a wide range of global institutions in order to network and explore future career options. I am hoping to share the information I have learned with other members of my group, and also use it to encourage collaborations with other groups both inside and outside of our institution. I am very grateful to DIMEN for enabling me to partake in this really exciting opportunity.
